Adam Smith vs. Samuel Smiles - Essay Example According to Smith, this entailed a non-interference or hands-off approach by authorities/governments towards private enterprise. His postulates were geared towards advocacy for the establishment of a laissez faire trade policy both on the local and international scene. Economic liberalism can also be regarded as fiscal liberalism because it entails the freeing up or giving a free reign to all matters pertaining to financial activities both at the individual and societal level (Perry, Peden & Von Laue, 2006). The basic aim of economic liberalization is to eliminate the involvement of organizations and institutions in making economic decisions that affect people’s economies.... He attributes the age’s productive powers and increase of quantity of work to three aspects or circumstances. He argues that division of labor enhanced every worker’s ingenuity, it saved time and the great number of machines that facilitated and abridged labor, enabling man to do the work of many (Perry, Peden & Von Laue, 2006). Division of labor also enhanced what Samuel Smiles attributes to failure of society because division of labor encouraged selfishness and individualism. These attributes according to Smiles did not do much in terms of developing societal economies, but encouraged in its stead a culture that bred social vices. These vices negatively impacted on the economic development of communities and nations. Individualism and the self-centered approach towards economic liberalization that Smith advocated for during his time did not help a lot in terms of improving the wellbeing of society. Samuel smiles on the hand, lauds division of labor as a great benefact or to the development and realization of capitalistic ethics. Smiles postulates that true growth in an individual and society in general is only possible through the spirit of genuine self help at a personal level. According to Smiles, no amount of intervention from institutions and legislation can contribute to individual advancement if the individual is not willing. Too much guidance and direction from government policy only leads an individual to exist in a helpless state (Perry, Peden & Von Laue, 2006). Commentary on poem After The Flood The poem â€Å"After The Flood† has a slow and steady tempo. The poet created it by not mentioning too many events at once, but slowly, and gives time for the observer to recall – â€Å"I remembered...† and gives his own opinion on the events – â€Å"It had not been a bad rise†¦Ã¢â‚¬  These give the readers a better understanding and a clearer picture on what is happening. As we read through the poem, we have an image of the observer, standing at the ruins of the park, observing carefully what is going on around and describing them in words what he sees and comparing them with the past condition – which was before the flood. The pace of the observer in observing is somewhat unified with the tempo of the poem, so the reader is like ‘following’ the observer and listening to him. After reading the poem, a calm and tense less image of the observer is created in our mind. Phrases like â€Å"The morning it was over†, shows that the observer is feeling calm and believes that everything is over and there is nothing more to worry about. â€Å"I walked†¦Ã¢â‚¬  shows the observer is worried of nothing and walked calmly to the Jersey side. â€Å"It had not been a bad rise† also shows that the observer doesn’t exaggerate on what he sees, but judges it fairly according to his own thoughts. â€Å"I felt I must surely†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ so familiar†, this sort of tell us that the poet is so unworried and have time to recall the past and being a little nostalgic. Line 17-24 shows us the observer comparing the condition of the river presently and during the flood, he is calm and carefully observing the situation and even the sounds around him. The river in this poem is described through comparisons or figures of speech. The observer thinks the river is amazing as its intensity has decreased considerably. The water is described as ‘swollen’; this gives us the image of the water flowing along the river in a rough motion and is forming little waves. It is disordered and dirty. Line 19-20 is a simile where the flowing river is compared to a beast that is sneaking around. It is referred as ‘beast’ as it had created a massive destruction to the place and has ruined everybody’s mood. 1. Benji Watson is the type of individual corporations everywhere would be proud to have on their team. New Gen Health Sciences is not his only choice, and I do not believe it would be a wise choice for Benji. The mere fact the Benji is a Liberty University graduate tells New Gen that he values honesty, has strong moral principles and prefers to be ethical in his dealings. These are qualities any corporation would value in their employees, even though the corporate culture of New Gen does not place much value in them. Integrity â€Å"For everyone to whom much is given, of him shall much be required; and of him to whom men entrust much, they will require and demand all the more.† (Luke 12:48 Amplified Bible) God has entrusted Benju with the ability to excel in education. This talent will take him into many places where he will have the chance to show and witness to others just how good God is. If he decides to become a part of New Gen, a company he already knows have integrity issues, he could lose what God originally intended for good. He must â€Å"guard and keep the deposit entrusted to him.† (1Timothy 6:20 Amplified Bible) New Gen is rolling out the red carpet to Benji, showering him with gifts to paint a beautiful picture to hang in a house built of cards. He must guard himself, â€Å"Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.† (Matthew 7:15 New International Version) When the CEO displayed his blatant lack of morals, having no regards for the feelings of the mother of the crying infant, or when he called those same customers he cared so much about, fat and lazy, this should tell Benji exactly how he feels about people in general not just customers. While this may very well be a true statement, Christians should not have lying tongues. If Benji becomes a part of this organization, a lying tongue is exactly what he will have to have to be successful. Does Benji really want to be a part of a corporate culture that is all about the amount of money they are making, having little regard for the lives they are touching. As a child of God we should deal ethically with our brothers and sisters. We should build a foundation on how the word of God teaches us to love one another. By â€Å"keeping our lives from the love of money,† (Hebrews 3:5 English Standard Version), we will not sell out for the temporary pleasure money will bring. As Christians, having a wrong relationship with money will only bring destruction to us. We must let the word of God be the final authority  in our decisions. Benji should build his hopes on things eternal, keeping in mind the â€Å"the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God.† (1 Corinthians 6:9) There will be other job opportunities where his values and integrity are not compromised. He should seek God’s best for his life and it is obvious New Gen is not it. They know how business should be conducted, as their promotions claim, but instead they choose to deceive others to get ahead. Benji should stand on what he knows is right and let God reward him.
